Early Stage Breast Cancer Not More Likely to Recur in Young Women

A recent study done at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia Pennsylvania shows that the assumption that woman who were 40 and under when diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) were more likely to have breast cancer recur, is wrong.

DCIS is a non invasive condition in which abnormal cells are found in the lining of the breast duct but they have not yet spilled out from the duct into other breast tissue.  The American Cancer Society reports that about 62,000 case of DCIS are diagnosed each year.

"They have debunked the commonly held belief that age alone is a risk factor for recurrence after treatment of DCIS," said Dr. Ann Partridge, a medical oncologist and researcher at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women's Hospital, in Boston.

Partridge has published about women's anxiety over their prognosis when diagnosed with a DCIS. She found that women are typically highly anxious, even though their risk of recurrence or of developing invasive breast cancer is low.
