In a study published in the September 2008 issue of the
Journal of Nuclear Medicine, researchers found that treatment plans for more than one-half of colon cancer patients tested were changed after
positron emission tomography (PET) scanning was performed on the patient. This was the largest multi-institutional study performed to date examining the impact of PET scanning in changing treatment management in patients with recurrent colo-rectal cancer. One of the lead researchers involved in the study commented that "
these results are compelling and indicate that PET should be more widely available to patients."
