UCLA scientists have found that cancer reacts differently to different kinds of sugars. The cancer tumors metabolized fructose more easily than glucose. These findings are surprising given the commonly held belief that all sugars are the same when it comes to cancer cell growth. In the study, pancreatic cancer tumors used fructose sugar to divide and spread. According to the Reuters report, the UCLA researchers said, "These findings show that cancer cells can readily metabolize fructose to increase proliferation. They have major significance for cancer patients given dietary refined fructose consumption, and indicate that efforts to reduce refined fructose intake or inhibit fructose-mediated actions may disrupt cancer growth." Fructose is present in high fructose corn syrup, a common ingredient in many foods consumed in the United States.
