How many times have you seen a tractor trailer speeding, make a dangerous pass, or cut someone off? Often such driving tactics result in a crash between the truck and a car. These collisions occur because the truck driver is tired, is using drugs to stay awake, or the truck company has not properly maintained the tractor and trailer. When a crash between a truck and car occurs the people in the car can be seriously injured or even killed. In fact 16 people a day are injured or killed as a result of reckless drivers of big trucks.
After an accident involving a tractor trailer the only way to find out if the truck driver was impaired, had been driving longer than allowed by Federal Law or that the truck was not being properly maintained is to hire a lawyer to investigate what caused the accident. The Washington Post reports that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has temporarily halted the granting of licenses to new bus companies. This action comes after a bus company that had its license revoked, got a new license under a different name. The renamed bus company is believed to have used retread tires on the steering axle which is prohibited by federal rules. The retread tires failed and caused an accident in Texas that resulted in the deaths of 17 people.

Overweight trucks do a great deal of damage to our road and bridges. In fact as reported in USATODAY investigators believe that overweight trucks contributed to the bridge collapse last summer in Minneapolis that killed 13 people.
Overweight trucks or tractor trailers also cause crashes and wrecks that seriously injure and kill people. Because the trucks are overweight they are harder to drive and take longer to stop. Also, it is just a simple law of physics, that when a truck is heavier and it crashes into a car the overweight truck will cause more damages and injuries.
If you were injured in a wreck with a truck or tractor trailer please contact our team of lawyers. We know how to find out if the trucking company was permitting its drivers to drive overweight trucks, or more hours than permitted by law. The attorneys at Berger & Lagnese will find out if your accident was caused because the trucking company was not properly maintaining their trucks. At Berger & Lagnese, we handle truck and car crashes in Pittsburgh, Greensburg, Uniontown and throughout the western part of Pennsylvania. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) did a study to evaluate the ability of drivers of large trucks (tractor trailers) to see cars and other targets using mirrors. This study found that 11% of targets were missed and about 2% were misidentifications. The greatest number of mistakes were made using flat mirrors alone. Flat mirrors caused the greatest number of blind spots. Using flat mirrors, the drivers did not detect many targets and misidentified many others. Regardless of the type or configuration of the mirrors, drivers substantially underestimated the distance of the targets from their own vehicle. They consistently estimated the targets to be closer to them than they actually were. This was especially true when the target was far behind the tractor trailer. This finding has important implications for the manner in which large trucks change lanes. Often trucks change lanes abruptly and at great speed on the mistaken belief that the car or other vehicle is very close them. This can cause an accident with another car or a crash by the truck itself.
Detection of cars and other targets was improved when the tractor trailer used a convex mirror mounted below the flat mirror. A look down mirror mounted on the passenger side also improved detection of cars close to the truck in the adjacent lane. Fender mounted mirrors did not improve detection.
Younger drivers were significantly better in detecting targets than older drivers and did so much faster.

An 11-year-old boy from Washington County lead police on a car chase.
This was an 8 to 10 mile chase at speeds of 80 to 85 miles per hour, according to the Pennsylvania State Police. Police said the boy stole a white Toyota station wagon from his foster mother. Police spotted the car and when the officer activated his lights, the chase was on.
The boy changed directions a number of times on interstate 70. At the 84 exit he stuck one of the state police vehicles and he managed to get around that vehicle.
Finally, the boy slammed the car into a utility pole along route 519, cutting the pole in half. Live wires came down on the car with the young driver still inside. He suffered only minor injuries, police said.
He was treated at Washington Hospital, and charged with aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person and fleeing and eluding.
