Serious burns suffered by U.S. Steel Clairton coke workers today

Of the 15 workers injured in the blast, 14 suffered burns to their faces and bodies, and 1 suffered chest pains, according to an Allegheny County spokesman Kevin Evanto.  A UPMC spokesperson confirmed that six injured workers were sent to Mercy Hospital, four to Presbyterian Hospital, one to McKeesport Hospital and three to West Penn Hospital.  Dr. Larry Jones, the medical director of the Burn Unit at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, said there are three patients there, two with burns on more than 30 percent of their bodies.  So far, the names and conditions of the injured workers have not been released.  “I can confirm that there was an explosion and fire at the B Battery of U.S. Steel's Clairton Plant coke making operation earlier today.  The incident did result in injuries. At this time, I cannot confirm the number of individuals injured nor the extent of injuries reported," said a U.S. Steel spokesperson.
