Several States Ask Baby Product Companies To Avoid BPA

Attorneys general from Connecticut, New Jersey and Delaware sent letters on October 10, 2008, to 11 companies (Avent America Inc., Disney First Years, Gerber, Handicraft Co., Playtex Products Inc., Evenflo Co., Abbott, Mead Johnson, PBM Products, Nature's One, and Wyeth) that make baby bottles and baby formula containers, asking that they no longer use the chemical bisphenol A (BPA) in their manufacturing because of the growing body of evidence that it is potentially harmful to infants.

Animal studies have linked BPA with breast, prostate and reproductive system abnormalities and some cancers.  However, the Food & Drug Administration has tentatively concluded that BPA is safe for humans.
