UPMC Adopts New Policy in Wake of Losing and Causing Death of 89 Year-Old Patient

In a clear admission that it failed to adequately protect an 89 year-old patient from getting lost and freezing to death on the hospital's roof, UPMC executives have announced a system-wide safety reform that they are calling Condition L.

UPMC is seeking to improve its patient safety policies because of the death of Rose Lee Diggs, who walked away from her 12th-floor room at UPMC's Montefiore Hospital about 5:15 p.m. on December 2, 2008, and was found by a hospital maintenance worker dead on the hospital's roof 12 hours later.

With Condition L now in place, if a patient goes missing, Condition L is to be initiated immediately.  This will then trigger a hospital-wide search for the missing patient.
