What is HIPAA?

A: HIPAA is an acronym for a federal statute titled, “Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996”.  HIPAA, and the federal regulations which implement HIPAA, address the use and disclosure of your health information by doctors, hospitals and other health care providers.  You have four basic rights under HIPAA:

  • the right to request a correction of your health information

  • the right to obtain an accounting of how your information has been disclosed
