Tests for Diagnosing Cancer

There are many methods used by doctors to diagnose cancer, depending on the type of cancer you have.

The earlier cancer is diagnosed and treated, the more likely that the cancer will be cured.

One method of cancer diagnosis is the biopsy. During a biopsy a small amount of tissue, cells or fluid is removed and examined under a microscope for the presence of cancer.

Another method of cancer diagnosis is endoscopy. During an endoscopy, a thin, flexible tube with a tiny camera on the end is inserted into body cavities and organs, allowing the doctor to view those areas for the presence of cancer. There are many types of scopes, each designed to view a particular part of the body.

Another method of cancer diagnosis is diagnostic imaging. There are many types of imaging, including x-ray, CT scan, ultrasound (sonogram), MRI, MRA, and PET scans. These produce an internal picture of the body which is viewed by a doctor for the presence of cancer.

Finally, there are laboratory tests of blood or urine which can be used to diagnose cancer. For example, urine cytology is an excellent method for diagnosing bladder cancer. In addition, some tumors release substances (tumor markers) which can be detected in the blood.
