When my 24-year-old brother Mike died at UPMC Shadyside our family had concerns about what had truly transpired at the hospital with regards to his care. A lawyer who is a friend of the family suggested that we have Paul Lagnese of Berger & Lagnese examine the circumstances around Mike's death. Paul subsequently investigated the matter and had numerous expert doctors and other medical professionals study the medical records. Paul then came to our house and met with us and reported that my brother died because the doctors and hospital failed to respond properly when Mike developed a very serious but correctable change in his condition. Mr. Lagnese explained to us that it was negligence that caused Mike's death.

Our family then filed a medical malpractice lawsuit and over the next three years the lawyers at Berger & Lagnese aggressively pursued our case. The case eventually went to trial and on May 23, 2008, the jury returned a verdict of $2,500,000 against UPMC Shadyside. The jury also took the unique act of writing a statement blaming Mike's death on the lack of training and supervision of nurses at UPMC Shadyside.

Throughout the process what impressed me most about working with Berger & Lagnese was their accessibility and willingness to clearly explain things. It was always reassuring and comforting to be able to get in touch with one of the lawyers at the firm knowing that I would be contacted promptly to review the legal issues at hand, our options, and the strategy moving forward. In addition, I appreciated being able to share my thoughts and concerns pertaining to our case and to be able to engage in meaningful discussions with our legal team. Such discussions helped in understanding all of the complexities of our case as well as what to anticipate as our case evolved.
