2 Leading Causes of Escalator Accidents

October 05, 2017

Among some of the most surprising accidents in the world are caused by escalators. Many do not expect an escalator to be dangerous, but compared to elevators, they have a shockingly higher risk for injury.

Here’s Why.

With over 35,000 escalators in the United States, the number is much smaller than that of elevators. However, the chance for injury on an escalator is nearly 15 times higher than if riding on an elevator. Essentially, there are two main causes of escalator accidents; one in which the passenger hurts themselves on the escalator, and one in which they fall over the edge of the escalator. Take a guess as to which one is more dangerous.

So What’s The Top Cause of Accidents?

As far as falling on the escalator goes, one of the leading causes is inappropriate footwear. This footwear typically leads to injury, as the passenger slips or trips over the escalator step and injures themselves. This is the more common injury, and though it usually leads to lesser pain, some can still be very serious. Now, as far as falling over the edge of the escalator goes, one of the leading causes of injury is misuse of equipment. This simply means the majority of people who fall off an escalator are those who may be trying to jump from escalator to escalator, or those who are sitting on the handrail to ride up it.
