Car Accidents Caused by Drunk Drivers

May 19, 2017

Drunk drivers are always out there, morning, noon and night, weekdays and weekends, holidays and vacations. If you’re lucky, you’ll never cross paths with one of them.

If you’re unlucky, you could become another car accident statistic.

Drunk Drivers and Car Accidents

Statistically, a drunk driver is a car accident waiting to happen. According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving and The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

  • Every 53 minutes, a drunk driver kills someone (that’s 28 people each day).
  • Nearly one out of every three traffic deaths involves drunk driving.
  • Even with a suspended license, 50 to 75 percent of convicted drunk drivers remain on the road.

Even more worrisome than these statistics is the recent trend upward in drunk driving deaths. In 2015, approximately 10,265 people died in drunk driving accidents, an increase of nearly 300 deaths from 2014. And in 2016, 28 people a day, on average, were killed in drunk driving accidents.

Protecting Yourself against Drunk Drivers

You want to avoid any and all drunk drivers, but the only way to do so is by never driving. That’s not realistic. However, you can decrease your odds of a car accident by being watchful and knowing what to look for. Don’t wait for a drunk driver to cross your path. Recognize the signs of a drunk driver and better protect yourself against a future car accident.

To reduce your risk of a drunk driving accident, be watchful around cars that:

  • Drive at night without headlights
  • Make wide turns
  • Turn illegally
  • Use the wrong side of the road
  • Drive very slowly
  • Stop suddenly without reason
  • Brake unpredictably
  • Almost hit other cars/objects
  • React slowly to stoplights
  • Weave, swerve or drift
